You're not alone

You already knew that but it's still reassuring to know that there are other adults who've decided to accessorise themselves with wires on their teeth.

What a crazy concept!

I've just got my first set of this jewellery called braces and would be keen to hear how you're coping and what tricks do you recommend to make the time go faster.

So, welcome to my braces journey...

It's a miracle! My teeth are straight!!

It's been a while since I logged on but my teeth continued getting straighter and straighter. Yes, I could have taken these braces off now... But not according to my orthodontist. Every time I mention that, she tells me off like I'm a school kid and tells me to stop counting. I guess I'm a rare adult bracer and all she usually sees are pimply teenagers. On my first visit she mentioned it will probably take only 8 months and that's what I set myself to. I don't think I can do a day longer. It's not actually that bad. Got completely used to them. I can eat, I can talk. At times I even forget I have braces. Until... I've been at meetings all day and had to talk for hours. I can feel my whole mouth getting lazy and sore, and start slurring - from pure laziness. And that's when I wanna pool the bloody things off.

First breakage

I don't even know when it happened. All I saw when i woke up was that one little braces bit fell off. Did I swallow it? Did it fall out? No idea. I'm still not eating food that is hard to bite so it must have been the force of liquid that did it. The only real pain with the breakage was to make an appointment and get myself to the orthodontist again. I'm not really into driving across town and juggling these appointments during my lunch break. I prefer to get into my soup instead. Well, the whole thing was fixed in no time. A bit of glue a bit of wire re-arranging and ... done.

Check out Food and Fashion sections

I'm a bit concerned I won't have much to talk about because this process is kinda long so I started a few new pages for you to check out. These are really a few favourites pulled together but still need some serious updating.

The Food section is all about my regular local cafes that have yummy meals and snacks that never let you down. Those that can't do, teach.... Get it? (just a reminder I can't eat at the moment...).

The Fashion tab is a bit of a random kid at the moment and needs more attention. I went to the Karen Walker show so it ended up on this blog. But don't worry and keep on visiting because I will get to update it soon.

Two weeks later

It's been two weeks and I still have braces. I have to admit that my mouth had enough and my stomach is seriously craving real food. You guessed it, I'm still on liquids. And will be for a few more days. That's not to say that nothing has happened. My bottom teeth have straightened! Yes, just like that... one day I wake up and they're straight. Exciting but a bit of an anti-climax now that their journey is over. They didn't have far to go. We're talking one millimeter here. I'm so used to having braces now that I forget to warn every new person about them. In the first week I was slightly obsessed with the new attachment so people had to get a close-up of my teeth on a regular basis.

Food oh food...

Solids are out for now. I've had soups, yogurt and juices and more soups. And I discovered the best soup ever - Pitango soups. They are soooo creamy and yummy and full of flavour. Hmmmm... I'm hungry...

OK, back to the blog. It's been a week and guess what - I'm losing weight. At least it feels that way. I have to admit that my diet has changed for the better. I definitely don't want chocolate and lollies because it all gets stuck everywhere. I had to say no to donuts, Russian fudge (my favourite), most lollies because they stick to your teeth and chocolate because it makes your braces look brown. It's so much easier to say no to these yummy things when you just can't have them, than when you decide to go on another diet. I haven't actually properly eaten any food yet, so Miranda's scene from Sex and the City is yet to come. A word of advice - buy yourself a handbag mirror!

First week

Yes, I am very keen to tell you all about it. Come on it's only the first week and I'm definitely not used to it yet. On one hand you're dealing with physical discomfort. On the other you've got to face the world and be judged by their first impressions of you. I'm a 30-something chick working in a corporate environment and have found that the first thing everyone says is "I didn't even notice that your teeth were crooked". Well, that's because your teeth are straight and you haven't been obsessing with them being straight for years. Plus it's a bit late to tell me that. The machinery is already in my mouth. I've also got people coming to me and telling me their braces stories from the past. All very useful information. I guess it's been done already but when it's happening to you, it becomes extra special and interesting. Thus the blog...

Kissing

No problems at all (from my end :-). It felt exactly the same. But he said he could definitely feel the extra bits. It was still 'good' he says. His tongue hasn't got stuck anywhere yet or got scratched by the wires. And that's all I'm gonna say on the subject. Your experiences?

Day One

I had no idea what I was getting myself into. After all the assessments you lie on the chair for a few hours while some strangers glue these little bits of plastic on your teeth. And then there's a wire. It sticks out making your lips looking supper botoxed. I've been promised to have a migraine so I've ben waiting for it. Nothing! I have to say the first day went pretty smooth. Not too much pain. Definitely a discomfort but just imagine (this is to people who don't and have never had braces!) sticking Frankenstein's teeth into your mouth.

Why did I even do it

Straight teeth.... Something I could only see on others and was getting more and more curious about how I'd look with nice straight teeth. I've been thinking to get braces for years but I always had an excuse. In my student years this was simply impossible. I hardly afforded a crappy old car and that left me with no extra cash for anything else. Braces! Ha! No way. I had different priorities to spend my pennies on. When I started work I couldn't even imagine how braces would go down when you want to impress an interviewer or your new colleagues. And then there were all these random trips to India and Asia for months on end so I was not able to commit to making to all these appointments.

Well, the day has come...
